DEP
SELECTS CONTRACTOR FOR DEAL LAKE FLUME RESTORATION
Will Also
Hold Public Meeting on Restoration Promised in "Coast
2005" Initiative
(05/107) TRENTON --
New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
Commissioner Bradley M. Campbell today announced that
the DEP has selected a contractor to begin restoration
work on the Deal Lake flume. He also announced that the
DEP will hold a public meeting to discuss restoration
plans for the flume.
"This project furthers Acting Governor
Codey's promises made in his 'Coast 2005' Initiative to
safeguard our shared coastal resources," Commissioner
Campbell said. "By repairing the flume and extending it
to the waterline, we can improve water flow between the
lake and the ocean and protect the herring that depend
on this resource."
"DEP's announcement today will ensure
the flume extension is completed in time for the herring
runs next spring," said Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr.
"I'm glad that the extension plan works for fishermen
and surfers, and that we can look forward to healthy
herring runs each year without needing to constantly dig
out the flume."
DEP awarded the $6,725,000
reconstruction contract to Jay Cashman, Inc., of Quincy,
Massachusetts. Construction should begin this September
and last approximately six months.
Deal Lake, bordering on the Village of
Loch Arbour and the City of Asbury Park, has a flume, or
culvert, that has deteriorated in recent years and
clogged with sand, preventing water from channeling
between the lake into the ocean.
The existing flume also does not
extend to the ocean's waterline, impacting the annual
herring migration. DEP reconstruction plans include the
removal of 220 feet of the existing flume, construction
of 490 feet of culvert flume, and excavation and
reconstruction of approximately 600 feet of the existing
stone jetty. The new culvert flume will discharge on the
north side of the existing jetty and will improve the
herring migration.
The reconstruction of the existing
jetty will begin simultaneously with the reconstruction
of the flume. The jetty will permit access for the
public and the fishing community atop the flume.
DEP will hold a public meeting on
Monday, August 8, 2005 to discuss the planned
reconstruction. The meeting will be at 7:30 at the
Allenhurst Municipal Building, 125 Corlies Avenue,
Allenhurst.
